THE FIRST SEMEP SUMMER SCHOOL

The first SEMEP summer school took place in the American Farm School premises, at Thessaloniki Greece, in August 1997 and lasted eight days.
It was attended by ten pupils (five boys and five girls) and two teachers from each one of the fifteen countries that participated (Albania, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Greece, Jordan, Israel, Italy, Lebanon, Malta, Palestinian authority, Romania, Slovenia, Turkey and UNRWA). Additionally, ten Greek teachers acted as instructors for the multinational groups of pupils. Coordinators and experts from UNESCO sister projects (Baltic Sea Project, Blue Danube River Project, Caribbean Sea Project, Western Mediterranean Sea Project) were also present.
During this summer school the students:
1. Presented the work done in their country.
2. Were taught, in multinational groups, about the project activities (in the classroom, in the laboratory and outdoors on the beach).
3. Participated in a one-day environmental education project near a river mouth and presented their findings in a plenary session.
4. Participated in two competitions: a poster one and a photograph one.
5. Had the opportunity to exchange experience with other students from other countries and to enjoy cultural evenings, both in the schedule and out of it.
The teachers participated in workshops, where the present and the future of the project were discussed.
The summer school was evaluated by the National Coordinators (NCs), in the second NCs meeting that followed the summer school. According to the NCs opinions all the tasks of the summer school were fulfilled.

UNESCO-SEMEP NATURE DISCOVERY SUMMER SCHOOL
Antalya, Turkey 2001

The second SEMEP summer school took place at Sea Life Hotel, in Antalya Turkey, in May 2001 and lasted three days.

It was attended by two SEMEP teachers and the National Coordinator from each one of the seven participating countries located around Turkey (Albania, Bulgaria, Greece, Israel, Palestinian authority, Romania and Slovenia). A representative of UNESCO and the representatives of Ministry of Education of Turkey and Greece also attended the summer school. An observer from Georgia has also attended the summer school.

The in-service-training program included re-evaluation of experiences and achievements of SEMEP as well as development of new targets and procedures by considering sub-regional cultural, economic and behavioural realities. The summer school focused mainly on the improvement of worksheets, content and procedures in order to fit more with the economic, social, and cultural conditions of the participating countries. The participants also visited SEMEP schools in Antalya, the Akdeniz University and the local Director of education separately.

A joint social program, in which the participants of both the summer school and the followed NC’s meeting participated, took place for further development of the relations formed among the participants.
